PDF vs PDF/A: What Is the Difference?

PDF/A is a preservation-focused subset of PDF

PDF/A adds restrictions and requirements intended to make documents reproducible in the future. That can include embedded color profiles, metadata, font handling, and limits on features that rely on external resources.

Adding PDF/A metadata is only part of compliance

A converter can add the structural PDF/A identifiers and output intent, but arbitrary source documents may still contain non-compliant fonts, transparency, encryption, scripts, or other content. For legal or records-management workflows, validate the output with a dedicated PDF/A validator.

Which conformance level?

Different PDF/A parts and conformance levels support different feature sets. If an archive, agency, or customer specifies a level, follow that exact requirement instead of choosing one at random.
